Which forms of identification are accepted for a notarization?
- State drivers license
- State ID card
- U.S. passport
- U.S. military ID
- Resident alien ID or “green card” issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
Acceptable identification must include a photograph, physical description, and owner’s signature.
Can I show a picture of my identification card?
No. You must present a physical ID in person for a notarization. If you do not have a physical ID, you have the option to use a credible witness who does have valid U.S. issued identification.
Can I ask a notary public for legal advice?
Providing legal advice, by law, is not permitted unless the notary public is also an attorney. A notary public serves as an impartial party.
What could prevent a notarization from being completed?
A notary public’s denial to complete a notarization include, but are not limited to; lack of valid ID or unverifiable ID, signer(s) not being present, expected coercion or lack of capacity, language barrier, unwillingness to take oath/affirmation, required information missing from document(s), or refusal to pay.
